Music industry road-shows
A number of high profile music industry road-shows have taken place with more booked. They serve to build industry relations, promote the MIP provision and give clients the opportunity to network with each other, the MIP advisers and industry professionals, a round-up of the events are below.

MIP Roadshow Manchester – ‘Breakin The City’ September 2006
Break in The City is the official fringe event for Manchester’s premier music industry conference. Providing the backdrop for the initial Armstrong Learning road-show, the day long network seminar was held at the Bridgewater Hall.
Over 300 visitors were able to perform, network, play demo’s, speed date with industry and take the opportunity to build new contacts from the many industry professionals attending.

Three main panels took place throughout the day and covered the topics of working with trade bodies and collection societies, MIP a New deal for Musicians and Social Networking, a look at the value of sites such as My Space and You Tube. Companies and organisations taking part included My Space, BPI, AIM, UK TI, MU, Go Events, The Band Agency, MPA, PRS/MCPS and a host of local practitioners and artists.

The event was extremely successful, closing with a network meeting for women in music and creative industries.

Music Industry Roadshow – Liverpool 2006
This second event featuring UK Trade and investment, The UK Trade bodies, collection societies and Armstrong learning set the format for the rest of the UK tour. The morning session introduced the services provided by each of the organisations, this was followed by a network lunch then one to one advice surgeries throughout the afternoon and closed with a feedback session and drinks reception.

Music Industry Road show – Leeds
This event featuring UK Trade and investment, The UK Trade bodies, collection societies and Armstrong learning followed the Liverpool format. The morning session introduced the services provided by each organisations, this was followed by a network lunch then one to one advice surgeries throughout the afternoon and closed with a feedback session and drinks reception.

Music Industry Road show – Brighton
The Brighton road-show formed part of the larger music industry event which took place over two days and was well attended by industry and clients alike.
The usual format was utilised with an open forum to follow.

Music Industry Roadshow – Newcastle
The Newcastle show was co-hosted by Generator following the regular format.

Music Industry Roadshow – Bristol (2 separate events)
The Bristol event formed part of a greater music industry presentation, with break out activities.

MIP Roadshow NCFE Conference – London – May 2007
This one day educational conference in London provided a number of industry led panels with a music industry theme and included live music from NDfM Clients, the audience included over 150 representatives form eduacational establishments across the greater London area.

Music Industry Roadshow – Inverness June 2007
This event formed part of a five day music and creative industries events under the Go North banner and featured a great number of leading music industry figures, they included Alan McGee, Jazz Summers, Martin Talbot, Music Lawyer Helen Searle and many more professionals form the Music and Film industry including the BBC and Channel 4. again in partnership with UK Trade and investment and collection societies and trade associations, the extremely successful event showcased 40 live acts, provided a unique networking opportunity and culminated in the now annual 2 day Rock Ness festival.

Bradford in tune – Bradford – May 2007
A one day music industry seminar, workshop and network session and live music and demo showcase, it brought musicians from across the region together with advisers from the music industry, Armstrong Learning, local council staff, funding advisers, promoters and record labels. The music industry speed dating provided a useful platform for musicians to network.

MIP Roadshow CCMC16 - Manchester – June 2007
This annual music industry convention at the comedy store provided over 300 visitors with a unique networking event, it featured panels on DIY and enterprise, a demo listening panel, an Urban summit and then open mic session, plus a speed dating session with members of the music industry. Panels were made up of guests from BBC Radio 1 Xtra, Xfm, All Fm, Sony Street Team, Decks for schools, Vman events, North South Devide promotions and artists such as Jonny J and Aziz Ibrahim.

Music industry roadshow – Birmingham – August 2007
This event followed the Armstrong Learning Annual General Meeting where advisers from across England came together to share good practice followed by a series of panels, listening sessions and a speed dating opportunity for local clients to meet the very experienced staff from other regions.

Media awareness
As well as approaching obvious media publishers such as Music Week, we worked at local level with regional and national publications to alert them to good news and change in our provision. We are currently in discussion with Sound on Sound magazine to look at opportunity and we follow success stories of our clients in the local media.

Accreditation opportunities
A great deal of work has taken place in the development of a level 2 music industry qualification for awarding body NCfE, this award is suitable for clients working on our open learning programme, wishing to formalise study. We have also developed a level 3 qualification for the wider creative industries. Both qualifications included consultation with British Music Rights, The Music Manifesto, CC Skills, Young Enterprise and the Music Sector Forum, A plan to discuss accreditation and progression with Bolton University is underway and other challenging opportunities await further meetings to collaborate with Bradford City Council, Leeds Media Centre, Leeds college of Music and Sound on Sound.

Value added incentives

International Conferences, seminars, B2B events and festivals
Armstrong learning has a presence through Exclusive Entertainment and RF Records at the most important events for music in the world. They include SXSW (live music event in Austin Texas. Considered the most important event in the world for breaking new talent on an international stage). Midem, now 40 years old and considered the most valued event for international licensing and publishing. Staged in Cannes, we have attended for over 15 years. Popkomm is Berlin’s European and international trade fair and responsible for 1000’s of music professionals doing business. As well as the three main events, AL are represented at Sonar (Barcelona) MWC (Miami winter conference) By Larm (Music conference in Norway) Musiki and Media (International music conference in Finland) In The City (Manchester’s premier international music event), Go North, Go Events, Go Moscow and Go Basque ( a range of conference and festivals based out of the Highland and islands of Scotland), London Calling (London’s annual business to business conference at Earl’s Court), plus, a great number of smaller independent events.

Through its arrangement with AIM, Armstrong Learning are able to offer clients and staff early bird discounted event passes and advice and guidance on networking at the events.
In addition, Armstrong Learning provide a powerful resource of international databases for music industry contacts for client use via the district adviser.


Record label
Armstrong have set up a production label to provide a platform for emerging talent to release and market work to the public whilst maintaining rights and ownership to the copyrights. The promotional compilations are marketed on-line and at international conferences and events in order to open up new opportunities for artists to work in the international marketplace. The label will increase its presence with an on-line shop on the AL website, this will allow any downloads or physical products to be eligible for the UK charts.

Physical and digital distribution
Armstrong Learning have a reciprocal agreement with Raw Fish (RF) records to distribute work on behalf of its students/customers via NDN and the Orchard, all deals are non-exclusive basis to help artists to maximise entrance to the market.

External labels – RF
Through RF Records, Armstrong learning can offer clients the opportunity to submit tracks for compilation releases, single or album releases with both physical and digital distribution via iTunes, Rhapsody and Napster.

  • Bass Foundation is the Urban imprint at Raw Fish, it has released three albums with some well reviewed hip hop tracks from well known newcomers to the North west rap scene. Lots of developing talent as young as twelve showcase new recordings www.myspace.com/bassfoundationrecords

  • Local funding initiatives

    Armstrong learning have been able to signpost many clients and staff toward funded initiative which are designed to help people move forward. Clients and staff have been able to attend seminars, showcases, release product, funding for projects and cut price duplication and manufacturing

    September 2007 initiatives
    The first 17 track MIP compilation is released at the POPKOMM music convention in Berlin, the promo-only first edition will be presented in a goody bag at a co-hosted reception at the British Embassy in Berlin on the 20th September. A further track from Liverpool act ‘Freemaker’ will appear on the 360 ‘music form across the nations’ CD and the MIP provision will form part of the content of a Music education forum which Phil will be speaking at.

    The first of 3 Armstrong Learning co-hosted 360 events (working in partnership with Sentric Music, North South Divide, SA Promotions, RF Records and Go Events will take place at Jabez Clegg on the 12th September with a free musicians resource CD, chance for attendee’s to play at ‘In The City’ in October and win a recording session and track compiled on a CD going out to Midem in Cannes 2008.

    The second event takes place in Berlin at the British Embassy on the 20th September and the 3rd is split between a music industry network event at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester on the 20th October and then 22nd at Jabez Clegg (as part of ‘Break In The City’ the official fringe event for ITC.

    Currently under planning is a Creative industries event at the Green rooms in Manchester, its theme and panel titles are ‘Marketing Me’ and ’30 minute strategy’ where the content is generic to all creative people and the panel will consist of TV producers, Journalists, Designers and in general, Creative entrepreneurs who’s unique selling point (ESP) have helped them ‘stand-out’.
    The event is on 10th October at the Green Rooms starting at 5.30 for 6pm it is a network event with workshop and drinks reception followed by guest DJ’s in the bar.     Making your mark in music - January - December 2008
    Music industry projects for clients to engage with and possibly run in co-ordination with schools. Provision is for 14-19’s - ideal for musicians or community project leader’s for teaching opportunities.
